Local Delicacies
With this series of paintings, elevating simple Filipino desserts such as: Halo-Halo, Taho and Turon, I hope to challenge perceptions surrounding cultural value and refinement. Iām heavily inspired by the notion that though Filipino cuisine is rooted in the working-class, they are rarely afforded the same prestige as those associated in fine dining or patisseries, especially in the western world. Through their transformation, I invite viewers to confront their own inherited biases and assumptions about culture, class and taste. Through self reflection, we can address our own unconscious beliefs and be more open to seeing ourselves and others, with a deeper and more considerate perspective.
